Death Benefits

The following benefits are available to survivors and the deceased at the time of cremation or burial.


Social Security

  • One time lump sum death benefit of $255 to surviving spouse
  • Other surviving spouses benefits (certain circumstances, if qualified)

Veterans Headstone or Marker

  • $300 Burial expense (certain circumstances, if qualified)
  • $150 plot or interment allowance (certain circumstances, if qualified)
  • US flag (most cases)
  • Burial in national cemetery (spouse usually included)
  • Inurnment in Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA is free for the veteran (spouse usually included)

City Taxpayers

Reduced inurnment prices in city cemeteries (some cities) or scattering of cremated remains in designated areas.


Life Insurance and Pensions

Often, life insurance or a pension is provided through someone's place of employment.


Church Members

Inurnment in church columbarium or cremated remains scattering in memorial garden (some churches).
